ChatGPT Mobile Notifications — How to Set Up and Manage Them

How to set up and manage ChatGPT notifications on your phone — enable useful alerts, silence distractions, and integrate with Focus Modes.

ChatGPT's mobile notifications can be helpful reminders or annoying distractions depending on how you configure them. The app sends several types of notifications, and most users benefit from keeping some while silencing others. Here is how to set up notifications optimally on both iPhone and Android.

What Notifications Does ChatGPT Send

The ChatGPT mobile app can send several types of notifications: response completions for queries that take longer to process, shared conversation activity (when someone views or interacts with a conversation you shared), feature announcements and updates, promotional content about new subscription tiers or features, and occasional engagement reminders. Not all of these are useful for every user, so selective configuration is important.

Setting Up Notifications on iPhone

On iPhone, go to Settings, then Notifications, then find ChatGPT in the app list. Here you can control: whether notifications appear at all, whether they show on the Lock Screen, in Notification Centre, or as banners, the notification sound, and whether they show previews. For most users, enabling notifications but disabling sounds gives you the information without the interruption. You can also long-press on any ChatGPT notification to access Quick Actions like muting for one hour or turning off that notification type.

Within the ChatGPT app itself, go to Settings then Notifications to control which types of notifications the app sends. Disable promotional and engagement notifications while keeping response completions and shared conversation activity if those are useful to you.

Setting Up Notifications on Android

On Android, go to Settings, then Apps, then ChatGPT, then Notifications. Android provides granular notification channel control — you can see each notification category (responses, updates, promotions) and enable or disable them individually. You can also set different importance levels per channel: High (makes a sound and pops up), Default (shows in the notification shade silently), or Low (appears minimised). Set response notifications to Default and disable promotional channels entirely for the cleanest experience.

Focus Modes and ChatGPT

iPhone's Focus Modes let you create context-specific notification rules. In Settings, tap Focus, and create or edit a mode. For a "Work" focus, add ChatGPT to the allowed apps list so you receive notifications during work hours. For a "Personal" or "Sleep" focus, exclude ChatGPT so it does not disturb your off hours. You can schedule Focus Modes to activate automatically based on time, location, or connected devices. Android's Digital Wellbeing and Samsung's Modes and Routines offer similar time-based app notification control.

Best Notification Settings for Different Use Cases

Heavy professional users: Enable response completion and shared conversation notifications. Disable all promotional content. Use Focus Modes to limit notifications to work hours.

Casual users: Disable all ChatGPT notifications. Open the app when you need it and check for updates manually. This prevents notification fatigue.

Content creators: Enable response completions for long-running content generation tasks. Disable everything else. Set notifications to silent with banner display so you see completions without audio interruption.

Team users: Enable shared conversation notifications so you know when colleagues interact with shared chats. This is important for collaborative workflows.

Turning Off Distracting Notifications

If ChatGPT notifications are more distracting than helpful, the simplest solution is disabling all of them at the system level (Settings, then Notifications, then ChatGPT, then toggle off Allow Notifications). You lose response completion alerts, but since most ChatGPT responses arrive within seconds, you rarely need them. For users between extremes, keeping notifications enabled but set to silent delivery gives you a notification history to check at your convenience without any real-time interruption.
